Tawny attributes her love of beauty and fashion to her humble upbringing. Born en route to America to a single Vietnamese mother who emigrated here along with two older sisters and only $25 to her name, young Tawny always got stuck with her older sister’s hand-me-downs. She became obsessed with fashion as a little girl because it seemed “glamorous.” Tawny started to work as soon as she could, and at 15, secured a receptionist job at a local hair salon. She soon fell in love with the beauty business and continued to work in this industry while putting herself through college at Oakland University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 2002. Her first office job would be her last. She immediately returned to the salon business and literally found the location for her first business, Liquid Salon. In April of 2005, she opened Liquid Salon with her (late) brother Timothy Upchurch, a Master Stylist. In 2012, Tawny began her career as a business consultant with the New York-based consulting firm Mosaic Research Management. In 2014, Tawny founded her own consulting business, Million Dollar Salon, to help other start-up salon owners. Her business workshops have sold out repeatedly and garnered her rave reviews. Dubbed “the pint-sized powerhouse” by the Detroit Free press, she has been featured in DBusiness’ 30 in Their 30’s, national tv series Start Up USA, Crain’s Business, Fox 2, WDIV, WXYZ, Hour Detroit, StyleLine, and Florine Mark’s Remarkable Woman & Ambassador Magazine.
